About the Mysore Classes

The Mysore style of yoga is the most transformative yoga method because a student can go deep into the practice rather than just skimming the surface.

​​

In the Mysore class, at the teacher’s guidance, students work through the traditional ashtanga practice. For newer students, a first practice is usually about 45 minutes, more experienced students will take the full 90 minutes.

 

When beginning the Mysore style class, part of it is memorizing the ashtanga sequence. This requires some willingness on the student's part - being willing to learn and memorize the sequence.

In a first Mysore class, the teacher will go over:

  • the Sun Salutations

  • some standing postures, which will be repeated in order to reinforce learning the sequence; these poses are shown in the video here on this pa

  • and a set of closing postures

​

Once the student has memorized and become proficient with the fundamentals, the teacher will move the student on to incorporate additional poses into their practice. The teacher makes this decision based on a number of factors.

The teacher-student relationship is one of the key components of the Mysore-style practice. Communication between teacher and student is of the utmost importance. At the beginning of every Mysore-style class, the teacher will do an individual check-in with each student. The teacher wants every student to challenge themselves, while also practicing in a safe way that maintains the integrity of this method of yoga.
